Importance Of Having A Mind-Blowing Social Media Profile

As a digital marketing consultancy company, we have digital marketers applying for various positions with us. We are careful about our hiring and take extra precaution in bringing up the right talent to the table.

In pursuit, our HR team just does not scan hundreds of resumes but also their Social Media presence. They look up social media websites like LinkedIN, Facebook, Twitter, Quora, Pinterest, Blogger, Google+ etc of prospective employees to understand their personality traits even before meeting them personally.

It’s not just us, but as per this survey one in five firms reject candidates based on their social media presence.

Instead of telling what irks employers, I am here to offer some tips that help you make sure that your profile helps you increase chances of being hired.

Profile Name

Your name is crucial for yourself to be found. Keep your name on social media as it appears on your resume.

Don’t put up your education degree or your pet name, because your employer does not know them or does not search on basis of it.

Profile Picture

There is an incredible argument with regards to profile photographs.

My typical belief is that you got to have a clear close up photograph on your profile. HR Managers can connect quickly when they see a clear photograph of yours.

When you have chosen your default photograph, make certain to stay with the same picture as your default photograph starting with one social media then onto the next, that way individuals effortlessly remember you over every social community.

Something else that aides in searches worth is naming your photograph document properly before transferring it. Make certain you have named it yourname.jpg rather than transferring DCIM02783.jpg.

Finally, make sure that your picture is clean, clear and crisp. You need to understand its importance because it is your avatar online. Make sure you dont put up a horrendous one like below

Personal Details

In your social details, be HONEST and mention your USP in a subtle way. Your bio is your first elevator pitch. Keep it concise, accurate and direct. Do not use acronyms or jargons here.

Different social media networks provide different text lengths for your details. In such a case, ensure that across platforms your message remains the same.

Personal Interests

Most Social networks allow you to express your favorite hobbies, movies, books, games etc. Its essential to display them on your profile as the potential recruiter can get an idea of what & whom you follow.

Your interests in different subjects makes you a human. Never skip mentioning this area as it is a real indicator of who you are.

Profile Web URL

So where does the username become possibly the most important factor? A few individuals who can’t locate your social media connections might simply punch your name in the vanity URL. Consider what individuals would seek you under, and verify that is your username that is incorporated in the URL.

Again, your pet name or your favorite passion must not be the right reflector.

Links to personal websites or other social media profile handles

Ensure that links to your profile, website, blog, favorites are all located in such a way that the reader of your profile can access it instantaneously. If your URLs are too big, you can just do a bit.ly and keep it simple.

Privacy Settings

Last but not the least, all social networks provide you with some basic profile view security. You can choose what can be shown to public, what needs to be shown to your friends what needs to be shown to yourself only and so on. I am not going to advise you what not to show, but there are few areas that you can provide so that visitors can understand you better:

  1. Your Profile Summary
  2. Links to your main website
  3. Default profile pic / avatar
  4. Likes/Dislikes

You can view your profile and judge for yourself, is this the image you wish to show to the rest of the world?
