There are times when a client complains because they feel like the number of site visitors to their site has plateaued. Their website has already been optimized, or at least it´s been optimized as far as their SEO staff or specialist has been able to take it.
Here are at least five of the most common issues that can be addressed to remedy this kind of client situation.
It´s All About Google
I´ve often discovered that such clients could have 10,000 pages indexed at Google, yet only 500 in Bing. Or they´re on the 1st page of Google for dozens of high value phrases, yet they´re stuck on the 2nd, 3rd or even 10th page at Bing.
Often SEO staff or specialists focus all their effort on Google, figuring; If I focus on Google, Bing will take care of itself. The reality here is that if you only focus on Google, you may be missing out on a lot of business opportunities.
As strange as it may sound, Bing tends to find it difficult discovering content on its own. Simply by submitting a sitemap.xml file through the Bing webmaster system can often dramatically increase the total number of pages indexed by Bing.
What´s great is for every additional indexed by Bing, you get a lift across your entire site. It’s not all you need to do for Bing, but it’s a fast and effortless way to get your website pages indexed in Bing.
Title Tags Packed With Keywords / Keyphrases
Sometimes your SEO staff or specialist tries and gets twelve keyword phrase variations inserted in a page Title. Just in case search engines will associate your page with all those keyword phrase variations. Regretfully this actually seems to dilute a page focus for search engines.
This destroys critical ranking value for really important phrases within the page content. Multiply this across all pages in the website, and there’s a pretty good chance that you could be seriously damaging your Search Engine Results Page rank.
A Singular SEO Focus
All too often website owners seem to believe that – It’s all about links. They hand over their website to staff or specialists who do one thing and one thing only, build inbound links.
Regretfully, it´s just impossible to get great SERP ranks focusing only one tactic, irrespective of how great that tactic may be. If you build a huge number of back links, for a short while your website could rank well in search engines, but not for long. After a while your SERP rank is going to take a serious hit. What is crucial for any website is SERP longevity.
Do talk to those website owners who failed to build up large quantities of unique, useful site content. Instead they relied on creating a mix of keyword stuffed titles, poor content value and a ton of backlinks, Google has really knocked such websites right out of the ball park.
When Google did this, a huge number of sites simply lost whatever income they were generating for their owners because now they just could not be found in SERPs.
Do take as broad an approach to SEO tactics for your website, this is most likely to ensure its longevity, in search engine result pages.
On Page Links – Please Do Not Go Overboard
- Header navigation
- Footer navigation
- Sidebar Navigation
- Related Products/Articles/Sites links
Today´s websites seem to have internal page level linking that is completely insane.
If there are 450 links on a single page, and they all have text, either as anchor text, or as image alt text, image names, and so on, when Googlebot looks at the page, it faces a massive amount of text that it’s algorithm ha to decipher, and weigh against the actual content of that individual page.
When link depth is thinned intelligently, it actually helps improve the ability of search engines to evaluate the link text versus page content. This does not even take into account the Google bot crawl improvements that come such thinning of internal links. So clean up internal links, ASAP please.
Negating Unique Page Content
A single most common issue on eCommerce websites is how they generate a data feed of their product listings for shopping comparison sites.
Seems great for business, but from an SEO perspective a bit of a disaster. When such websites do this, they´re taking what little unique content they’ve got on their product details pages and distributing it out to countless comparison sites, causing massive – duplicate content – issues within search engines.
What makes a bad situation worse when data scrapers scoop up those data feeds, and in moments one can find the same product descriptions on fifty data scraper sites.
By the simple act of taking the time to create two versions for every product description, and keeping the more extensive, well crafted version for your own site, you can serve both masters, the need for unique content on your bread and butter – primary site – and the desire to have your content found on comparison sites.
Why Not Add Your Experiences?
The message in these five SEO tactics is to hopefully get you to think about what you’re doing a little more, and consider how you can take your site(s) to that next level using a solid SEO foundation for SERP longevity.
