Does great SEO guarantee a great website?

In one word – No. Great SEO (search engine optimization) applied to website content helps drive traffic to the website via search engine ranking, but will not keep users on a website or convince them to buy.The goal of most websites is to get a site visitor to:

  1. Subscribe to your newsletter

i.e. leave their contact information behind for you

  1. Contact you immediately
  2. Purchase one ( or more ) of your products or services

Great search engine optimization applied to website content helps drive traffic to the website via search engine ranking, but will not keep users on a website or convince them to buy.

The goal of most websites is to get a site visitor to:

  1. Subscribe to your newsletter

i.e. leave their contact information behind for you

  1. Contact you immediately
  2. Purchase one ( or more ) of your products or services

To achieve this there are really several things about the website that have to be carefully considered in addition to on-page and off-page SEO.

Take a long hard look at the site visitors landing page.  Do this in at least five different Browsers, I.E. ( at least version 7 & 8, definitely 9), Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Safari.

If the websites landing page breaks up in any of these Browsers you have an issue that must be fixed before the website will earn you anything.

What a site visitor – Sees – within their Browser, when they land on your website, and are scrolling up and down is really important.

Research shows most site visitors want to find the information that they came to the website looking for displayed within their Browsers as quickly as possible.

Hence, the website visitors landing page is the best place to display a featured product or service, your contact information or any other important piece of information that you think the site visitor is looking for.

A Call To Action

Call 2 action

Some essential information that should be on the websites landing page are:A call to action. This is a simple statement that requires the site visitor to perform some action i.e. Sign up for your newsletter for example.Display of contact information i.e. Sometimes a site visitor just wants to get access to your contact information to get in touch with you.

Let’s briefly explore – A Call To Action:

A call to action is a statement that helps answer two questions for the site visitor:

  1. Why am I here?
  2. What do I do next?

Well written – Call to Action – page content allows you to guide your site visitor to where you want them to go next on the website and get them to do something there – that you want.

Research shows that you have approximately a 15 to 20 second window to accomplish this and keep the site visitor from navigating away from your website.

Hence, if you want to keep the site visitor on your website, make sure your – Call To Action – page content is the focus of the landing page and answers why the site visitor landed there in the first place.   While creating this content, keep in mind what you want the user to do next while on the website and tailor the – Call To Action – message to accomplish this goal.

Website Visitor Friendliness – Website Navigation

Website Navigation

The longer a site visitor stays on your website the better chance of converting them a customer. If a visitor cannot navigate around your website easily or understand the information on the website they will simply leave the website and navigate elsewhere.Hence take a close look at the menu items on the website are they descriptive enough? Do they actually lead to website pages that display the correct information?

  1. Does the Contact Us page have your latest, correct – phone and fax numbers
  2. Is the Email ID you use for site communication spelled out correctly

And so on.

Website Content

Content Multiple Notes

The site content needs to be relevant, brief, and to the point. Be really careful here. In today’s digital world most people are numb long selling pitches. These they just skip over most of the time.Keep the content simple and about the visitor’s needs. This will make their reading experience more about their needs – than your sales pitch. If you use a shopping cart on the website make sure it is an easy process for the visitor to check out and purchase your product or service. Ideally a two click process. Most visitors do not work overly hard to spend their money on your website.

The best way to test the user friendliness of your website is to sit back and take serious notes while observing new visitors to the website navigate the website without your help. Then you will see where they get stuck and how to improve the user friendliness of the website.

There are several modestly priced services available on the Internet that uses ordinary site visitors to test your website for you at pretty modest prices. If in doubt using such a service may prove to be an eye opener.

Sure, SEO is a pretty important element for any website. SEO at best will direct traffic to the website.  However to be truly successful make sure the website lives up to the challenge of successfully selling your products and service after SEO has done its job of streaming site visitors to the website.

I've taught marketing and finance at a few MBA schools in Mumbai, India. These subjects are like a horse and carriage. You can't have one without the other.

I am technology savvy too as I am armed with an M.Tech from Manchester University, UK. In that sense, you could call me a geek-marketer, as I’m comfortable with both technology and marketing.

I have written and published 83+ books in tech and digital marketing. Many of these are available on Amazon.

I've been working in digital marketing for around 24+ years. I love to teach the subject, plus define, execute, and tweak digital marketing strategies for my own websites and my clients.

I'm moving my love for teaching to the web.
